For many landlords, who wouldn’t dream of kicking a tenant out on a whim, this new law will simply enforce best practice.

At Shelter, day in and day out, our support services around the country see people absolutely floored by the arrival of a Section 21 notice. Forced out of their home for no reason, traumatised, struggling to find anywhere to live, with only eight weeks to work out how to safeguard their future.

That’s why we have so unreservedly welcomed the Government’s plans to scrap Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions, so that private renters can no longer be shown the door unless their landlord has a legitimate reason. This historic change will offer England’s 11 million private renters the security they desperately need.

Although scrapping the Section 21 eviction will slam the brakes on the broken private rented sector, there will be opposition. Fierce opposition, even.
